In northern Nigeria, a child memorises the Qur'an on a wooden board. He writes out a verse by hand, recites it until he owns it, then washes the board clean and writes the next one. 6,236 times — once for every verse in the Qur'an.
He does it that way not because he wants to, but because his class has one copy of the holy Qur'an between forty children. It is the same in classrooms across Central African Republic and Malawi, where students pass a few worn copies between them. When we asked one student in Malawi how it felt, he answered simply: “I always pray that I get a Qur'an of my own.”
